In may 1842 Daniel at the age of 12, was walking home after tending the sheep of farmer Watson. Passing by Headley's wood he stumbled over a naked dead body.
"I was returning home through Headley's wood, and on going out of my path to pick up a stick I saw the deceased about a rod and a half from the foot path; he was lying on his left side, one leg was straight and the other over it and a little curled up; his left arm was almost under him, and the right arm laid out straight; the body was quite naked , exept for a peice of blue checked shirt in one arm. I was much frightened, and went home and told my father, who would not beleive me. In the morning I showed the body to several people."Daliel's first wife Mary, died in 1877 and is buried in Great Easton on the 6th June.
April 1881, Daniel was charged with stealing a harrow at th Chelmsford quarter sessions. Sentenced to one calendar month or Three pounds, two shillings and sixpence.
In 1881 the youngest of 6 children William, George and Emma wer inmates of the Dunmow Union Workhouse.1883 Daniel remarried on the 6th jan to Emma Dickenson widow of Mr Perry.
James, the third son was an Agricultural Labourer and lodging with Henry Wilson at Mill End Green.

Daniel Patient was sentenced to 6 weeks hard labour at Springfield prison on 5th April 1881 at Chelmsford quarter session, for larceny and receiving stolen goods. He is in the prison in the 1881census taken on 3rd April, so presumably was there awaiting sentencing. His children William and George were in the workhouse.
