Descendants of John Pashion

Second Generation

2. Ann Pashion (John ) was born in 1669 in Great Easton. She was christened on 25 Dec 1669 in Gt Easton. She died in 1738 in Great Easton. She was buried 1 on 7 Mar 1737/1738 in Great Easton. Ann was baptized on 25 Dec 1669 in Great Easton.

Ann, the eldest child of John and Ann Pashion was first mentioned in records, apart from her baptismal entry, in 1691 as being the mother of a daughter and then of a son.

Mary Patience, daughter of Ann Patience, baptised 27th May 1691
Joseph Patience, baseborn son of Ann Patience, oath of the pastor of Stebbing 13th July 1699

What makes this story more interesting is that the birth of Mary caused a court case, the details of which are to be found in the Quarter Sessions of the Peace held at Chelmsford on Tuesday 9th January 1693/4. The item has been translated and reads as follows from the antiquated English of the period:

(No Date) "Robert Stubbing of Great Canfield, yeoman, and William Vinyard of Great Dunmow, gent; Peter Stubbing of Estaine Magna (Great Easton) labourer to answer the overseers thereof touching a female bastard child born of Ann Patience of the same, single woman, likely to be chargeable thereto.
Added on 3rd January Release of security.

It would seem that Peter Stubbings is the father of the child Mary and the very mention of Robert Stubbings would indicate that Peter came from a good family and that they stood by him in effect granting Mary and Ann leave to live in Great Easton and if necessary for the overseers of the poor to help out Mary and Ann if the need arose. This was a very difficult time in the country with many poor having to be supported by the local parish into which they had rights to live. The parish council and the overseers of the poor obviously wish to have as few poor as they could and therefore they pursued the paternity of any base born or bastard child so that the natural father could support the child rather than the parish filling this role. What does seem surprising is that already we have mention of two other parishes in this tale, that of Great Canfield and the larger parish of Great Dunmow.

What became of Ann I have no idea, nor do I have any idea what became of Joseph. Mary on the other hand I think married an Edward Bright on 14th October 1718.

Ann married Peter Stubbings. Peter was born in 1670.

They had the following children:

7 F i Mary Patience was born in 1691 in Great Easton. She was christened on 27 May 1691 in Stebbing. Mary was baptized on 27 May 1691 in Great Easton.
