Aligators: Tracked landing craft

Monday 24 March 2003

The Aligator, like the standard Landing craft, was developped in the everglades by Higgins. It was tracked so it could not only come to the shore from the launching ship but also go up the beach.
2 came into Utah beach.
This one was on display at Utah beach outside the museum. In 2006 it was taken away as it was starting to crumble.

The LCTV has now been installed in the museum after renovation.
The reason why only 2 came in to Utah beach while many had been used in the Pacific was a politico/military jealousy. The marines used them successfully in the Pacific, but the army had to test everything they used. So they couldn’t use equipment already used by the marines until they had tested it.
