UTAH beach 1984

Tuesday 8 January 2002

After a half hour delay the ceremony started in great pomp and rigour of a military manoeuvre. The eight heads of state had arrived in the VIP lounge brought by helicopters with an interminable wait (for the 20000 spectators) between them. The ground behind the dunes had been turned into an anti aircraft missile installation.

Among the guests of honour were president Mitterand, president Reagan, Pierre Troudeau, Queen Elizabeth II queen Beatrix of Holland, King Olaf of Norway, and King Baldwin of Belgium.
To the sound of rolling drums, the national flag of each nation (Belgium, Canada, US, England, Norway, Holland, and France) were brought out from the ranks towards the masts mounted on the beach. As the flags were hoisted the flight of the French Patrol crossed over and mounted into a bouquet of red, white and blue smoke.

President Mitterand evoked in his speech the sacrifice of those that had been given the mission to go to victory or death on this beach.
